Vocabulary
Types of DNA data - parental verification - low and high density genotyping - whole genome sequencing - mutation and association tests - GWAS (genome-wide association study) - SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) & microsatellites (STR) DNA Analysis - understanding genotype data - platforms (Illumina, Affymatrix, STRs) - data quality - assumptions for analyses Getting the Data - what data do you need? - which test to use (Embark, MyDogDNA/Mars, UCDavis)? |
Information Derived from DNA Data
- heterozygosity, genetic diversity - inbreeding (identity by descent) - shared homozygosity - kinship coefficient - runs of homozygosity - population genetic structure - principal components analysis (PCA) - linkage disequilibrium - DLA haplotypes - lineage markers- Y chromosome, mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) - cluster analysis - phylogenetic relationships - ancestral breed composition - evidence of admixture (cross with another breed) Applications of data - identification of mutations - trait and disease association - design of breeding strategies - breeder tools (MyDogDNA, ICB, UC Davis) |
COURSE INFO
How long? How much?
The course is approximately 10 weeks; fee is $125. After you register, you can sit in on the course again as many times as you want. How much time will it take? Generally there will be 3-5 hours of reading and homework exercises each week. You can work on the class schedule or at your own pace.
